Safety First

We help you identify what type of glass you actually need. Replacing ceramic with regular tempered glass in a woodstove is a fire risk, and we won't let you make that mistake.

Decades of Experience

Family-owned since 1962, we've been Hamilton's go-to for specialty glass. If we haven't seen your stove or fireplace model before, we've probably seen a hundred just like it.

Why It Matters

The Right Glass for the Right Fire

Fireplace and woodstove glass is not something to guess on. The wrong type of glass can shatter on the first fire, creating a serious safety hazard. Here's why Hamilton homeowners trust us with the job.

How It Works

Three Steps to New Fireplace Glass

Getting replacement fireplace or woodstove glass is easier than most people think. Here's the process.

Pick It Up and Install

Most jobs are ready the same day. Pick up your new glass at 208 Queen St. North and install it yourself, or bring your stove door in and we'll help fit it.

We Identify and Cut

Choose from clear, frosted, tinted, or textured glass — each with a different look and feel for your space.

Measure or Bring It In

Bring us your broken glass or the door itself, and we will take care of the rest. If bringing in the glass, please place the broken piece in a box for safe transport. You can also provide the measurements of the opening. If you cannot come in, email us a photo of the glass with a ruler beside it, and we can provide an approximate quote.

Which Glass Do You Need

Tempered Glass vs PyroCeram Ceramic

The two types of high-temperature glass we stock look similar but perform very differently. Here's how to pick the right one.

Fire-Rated Tempered

Tempered Glass

Heat-treated to be five times stronger than regular annealed glass, with a thermal shock rating of 400°F. Available in clear, tinted, and textured finishes, plus fire-rated Georgian Polished Wire (GPW) and Georgian Cast Wire (GCW) options. Suitable for moderate-heat applications where the glass does not sit close to open flame.

Best For

Fireplace screens · Wood stove enclosures set back from flame · Moderate-heat applications

Applications

Decorative fireplace panels, safety screens, and hearth glass where the glass is not directly exposed to concentrated heat or flame.

PyroCeram Ceramic Glass

Not technically glass, PyroCeram is a transparent ceramic manufactured by Corning with virtually zero thermal expansion and a thermal shock rating of 1,380°F. It passes UV light while blocking infrared. Available in 5mm (3/16") thickness with a slight amber tint and subtle texture. This is what you need for anything where the glass sits close to actual flame.

Best For

Woodstoves · Gas fireplaces · Cast-iron stoves · Pellet stoves · Enclosed fireplaces

Applications

Woodstove door glass, gas fireplace viewing panels, pellet stove doors, and any enclosed appliance where flame sits within four inches of the glass.

Common Questions

What to Know About Fireplace Glass Replacement

How do I know which type of glass I need?

The safest approach is to bring us the broken piece or a photo of your appliance. As a general rule: if the glass sits on a fireplace screen or decorative panel away from the flame, tempered glass is usually fine. If it’s the door of a woodstove, gas fireplace, or any enclosed appliance where the flame is close, you need PyroCeram ceramic.

Can I replace ceramic with tempered glass to save money?

No. This is one of the most common mistakes we see, and it’s dangerous. Tempered glass cannot handle the sustained high heat and thermal shock of an enclosed fire. It will fail, sometimes on the first fire, sometimes on the tenth. Always replace ceramic with ceramic.

Why did my ceramic glass break?

PyroCeram is remarkably durable. Most of the pieces we replace have been in service for 20 to 30 years or more. When it does break, it’s almost always from physical impact (a piece of firewood, a poker), overtightened retaining hardware from when the stove was assembled, or eventual thermal breakdown after decades of use. None of these are your fault.

How long does replacement take?

Most PyroCeram glass is ready within a couple of days, provided you have accurate measurements or bring us the broken piece. Tempered glass typically takes 3-4 weeks. If the shape is unusual or the size is larger than standard sheet stock, additional time may be required.

Do you install the glass, or do I do it myself?

For most residential fireplace and woodstove doors, homeowners install the glass themselves. It usually involves removing a few screws or clips holding the retaining hardware. Bring us the door if you’d like help fitting it, or take photos of the assembly and we can walk you through it.

What if I have an antique or unusual stove?

Bring it in. We’ve replaced glass in almost every type of Canadian wood stove made in the last 60 years, plus plenty of European and American models. If we can measure it, we can cut it.

I need a piece of dark brown glass for the front of my stove and couldn't buy it anywhere. Came down here, told them what I wanted, gave them a pattern, and they made it. Awesome. Great price.
